WHAT IS 4X

My name is Josie Mcfall and I have been racing Four cross for the last 7 Years now both international and in the UK.
I love the fast and competitive nature of 4X, the elbow to elbow battling the ability to make passes and be passed. It all happens so quick and is just such a thrill! People think of it as a demolition derby, but really it’s a game of chess and when you can make a move and knowing when you can’t. At the end of the day you need to be crossing that finish line.

What is 4X?

Fourcross is 4 riders that race head to head down a 40-60 second MTB track, it normally consists of Berms and jumps, it is a non-contact sport, but rubbing is racing and aslong as it not to try and knock a rider off but just to get past/Block them it wont be frowned upon.

There are 3 Qualifying heats, which depending on results determine if you make it through to the knockout stages, then the final. So, you get to race loads in one day and normally against different people.

What bike/kit do you need?

Gone are the days you need a ‘4X’ Bike, most of the competitors are on short travel trail bikes, Some are on full enduro bikes, but it isn’t uncommon to still see single speed jump bikes.

It really is a case of race what you bring, and as long as you feel comfortable and confident on that bike you should race well. The only two stipulation in kit is that you need to have two working brakes, along with a full face helmet.

There are age categories from under 11 up to 55+ so it really is for everyone.

You can find British 4X on all social media and through their website : Schwalbe British 4X and they will also be able to help you locate your nearest track/Club
4X Protour is the world series that is open to anyone 17+ with a race licence with certain races having categories for all ages - 4X ProTour – Four Cross Mountain Bike World Series

European Fourcross runs a series including some dual slalom for all age categories : https://www.4cross.eu/~nova4cr1/

How can you get into it? Both racing & riding

If you’ve got a bike and enjoy racing your mates, you’re into it! The British 4X series runs a 10 rounds series (predominantly in the south of England) and you can rock up to one of these and give it ago.

You only need a British cycling race licence if you want to compete outside of the ‘BigFun/Beginners’ Class and actually want to add up some points in the overall series.
