GETTING TO KNOW Isla Jebb
I’m Isla, I’m 15 years old and I currently race cyclocross, road and MTB. I’ve been riding for as long as I can remember and was always out on my bike with my family, as well as running and walking. I started racing cyclocross when I was about seven years old. Coming from a sporty family, I had already completed all 214 Wainwrights by the age of six and had started doing my first few running races.
How did you get into cycling?
I was always going to races and watching my parents compete, so it was only natural that when I was old enough, I started racing too. I remember doing my first few races in my walking boots!
What’s your favourite discipline?
This is a tough one! I’d probably have to say cyclocross. I love the atmosphere and variety of the courses, it’s always fun and challenging. I’ve also really enjoyed getting into road racing this year. I did my first few road races and came away with 5th at the National Championships, which I was really pleased with, especially as a first-year. I also managed 2nd at the MTB National Championships.
Favourite place to race and why?
I love any cyclocross race with some mud! I was definitely a fan of the National Trophy race held by Hope at Skipton - it was a proper cross course and had everything that makes the sport so much fun. I also really enjoyed the National Road Championships course in Scarborough. The climb was hard and made the race more interesting.
What are your aspirations?
I’m really looking forward to seeing where cycling can take me in the future. I want to keep progressing, challenge myself at higher levels and see how far I can go in the sport. I’d love to continue moving through the junior ranks but, for now, I’m focused on learning, improving and enjoying the journey along the way!
What is you go to race day breakfast?
Probably some porridge with fruit and syrup on!
Favourite place to ride and why?
I love riding in the Lake District as it’s where I’m from. There are some great local MTB and gravel trails, and I love being able to ride straight from home into the hills. I’ve also loved riding up the passes in the Alps. The views are incredible and there are no potholes in the roads!
Do you do any other sports?
As well as cycling, I also enjoy running. Recently, I represented England at the British & Irish Mountain Running Championships, finishing 11th individually, while we came away with 2nd team. I really enjoy running and think it complements my cycling well.
